Why Cheaper is Seldom Better

As Oscar Wilde once said, “A fool is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing” and that is particularly true in business, and specifically true when recruiting using a fixed fee model.

Yes, price and cost are important, especially in today’s market, but often taking the cheap option can end up costing you more in the long run.

Here at Pioneering People, we know that we’re not the “cheapest” company offering a flat fee option out there, but, and this is the crux of my argument here, what we offer in value added service for the price, is more valuable to the companies that use our services than joining a race to the bottom on price.

To put this into perspective, one of our long-standing clients was under pressure to trim their recruitment costs, which is fair enough, but to do this they decided to use one of the cheap fixed fee recruiters on the market.

They were wonderfully open about why they were doing this and were very quick to say that we hadn’t done anything wrong and that our service was great and worked well. They just assumed that they could use a similar company to Pioneering People and achieve the same results, whilst spending less.

Obviously, we tried to dissuade our client away from making this decision but sometimes you just must let people make their own mistakes and be there to pick up the pieces for them when it all goes wrong.

Anyway, fast forward to two days later, and cue a phone call with a thoroughly miserable recruitment manager complaining that they’d paid their money and got absolutely no help in return.

    • Did this cheaper option offer to write their advertisement for them? No!
    • Did this cheaper option offer to assess and proof the advertisement to ensure it would achieve the desired response from the campaign? No!
    • Did this cheaper option offer to place the advertisement onto the job boards for them? No!
    • Did this cheaper option offer free access to a market leading ATS as an added service? No!
    • Did this cheaper option brand their advertisements so that the applicants knew which company they were applying to? No!
    • Did this cheaper option offer to search CV Databases to identify passive candidates? No!
    • Did our client quickly decide that the cheaper option was a monumental waste of money? Yes, they did!

So, is cheaper better? Not in this instance it’s not.

Yes, you can take your roles to market using a fixed fee competitor of Pioneering People and it will undoubtedly be cheaper, but, in the long run, it will end up costing you more because you’ll have to spend a lot more time creating the advertisement, placing it and managing the applicants than you would do by using a value added company like Pioneering People.
